,,L/ -
\4i
Item# 7 .B. 1 .
ty of MEMORANDUM
lk •
River TO: Park and Recreation Commission
FROM: Stephen Wensman, Planner
DATE: July 8, 1998
SUBJECT: BMX Update
Update
On July 1, Jeff Asfahl and I met with Margo Foster and John Thompson to
get an update on the BMX planning. The BMX group are still very interested
in developing a BMX site in the City and are excited to have a possible
location in Hillside City Park.
John Thompson is still trying to organize the BMX group and researching the
appropriate not-for-profit status. The group is still determining whether to
• be associated with the NBL (National Bicycle League) or the ABA (American
Bicycle Association). The group is leaning towards affiliation with the NBL
as it may have some trail design assistance and better services.
There was further discussion about whether or not the BMX site would be a
public site or whether it would be used for members only with special days
open to the public for training, demonstrations, and supervision. Questions
regarding liability were discussed and Jeff Asfahl will be researching the
matter further. Other design issues were discussed such as parking, fencing,
concessions, workshop structure, and other BMX related structures and
activities. A BMX site in St. Michael and one in Minneapolis at Buck Hill
may be good examples to look at for design ideas and related issues.
John Thompson and Margo Foster left the meeting with copies of the site
plan and a concept for the BMX site. They will be preparing a concept sketch
plan for the dump site clearing which can then be incorporated into one of the
concept plans for Hillside City Park.
•
13065 Orono Parkway • P.O.
