Elk River
Municipal Utilities UTILITIES COMMISSION MEETING
TO: FROM:
Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission Troy Adams, P.E.—General Manager
John Dietz—Chair
Al Nadeau—Vice Chair
Daryl Thompson—Trustee
MEETING DATE: AGENDA ITEM NUMBER:
November 18, 2014 6.1a
SUBJECT:
Staff Updates—General Manager
DISCUSSION:
• Amendment language review is complete for the proposed Sprint 2.5 Upgrade which will
increase attachments at the Gary Street, Auburn Street, and Johnson Street water towers.
Amendments may be ready for approval as early as this November Commission meeting.
Prior to approval, there is a temporary rent issue to be resolved for the Auburn Street
water tower.
• I attended the 50th Annual Minnesota Power Systems Conference(MIPSYCOM)on
November 4-6 in Brooklyn Center. There were other municipal utility personnel in
attendance from Shakopee, Willmar, Marshall, Central Minnesota Municipal Power
Agency(CMMPA), Rochester, Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency
(SMMPA), Moorhead, and Austin. I spoke with many people from Alliant,Xcel, Great
River Energy, Connexus, and Dakota Energy about presentation and common industry
topics. The conference is sponsored by the UofM and provides continuing educations
credits required to sustain my professional engineering license. This year may have been
the best one I've attended. There were more presentations from utility personnel
regarding challenges they have overcome, or projects they have worked on. And there
were fewer presentations by sales representatives highlighting new products. Some of
the sessions of most interest were:
o Emerging Issues and Trends as Viewed from Washington, D.C.
o Applied Professional Ethics for Engineers
o Determining the Capacity Impacts of Plug-In Electric Vehicles on Xcel Energy's
Distribution System
o Great River Energy Distributed Generation Pilot Program
o Photovoltaics Outlook for Minnesota
o Renewable Energy Lessons Learned by Dairyland Power Cooperative
o Solar Valuation—Process for Determining Economic Value by Dakota Electric
Association
o A Panel Discussion of Revenue Metering, Arc Flash Hazards, and Mitigation
o Power Quality Measurements from Smart Revenue Meters
■R, POWERED 81
INA Page 1 of 3 NATURE
Reliable Public
Power Provider P O W E R E D T o S E R V E
86
