Pk? <br /> Item #: 8. <br /> fifty of <br /> Elk MEMORANDUM <br /> River <br /> TO: Park and Recreation Commission <br /> FROM: Michele McPhersotP5irector of Planning <br /> DATE: December 28, 1999 <br /> SUBJECT: Planning Retreat— Community Involvement <br /> Request <br /> The Commission is asked to brainstorm ways to increase community involvement and <br /> partnerships for park development and stewardship purposes. <br /> Analysis <br /> Commissioners Huberty and Reitsma attended the 1999 Minnesota State Recreation <br /> Conference. At this conference, community involvement and partnerships was one of <br /> • the topics of discussion. Commissioner Reitsma suggested that the Commission be <br /> more proactive in marketing and creating partnerships for park development and <br /> stewardship. <br /> A few ideas for the Commission to consider are: <br /> 1. Adopt— a — park programs <br /> 2. Regular park development features in the City's quarterly newsletter, The <br /> Current <br /> 3. Elk River Star News coverage at park openings or dedications <br /> 4. Monthly column by staff or Commissioners in the Elk River Star News? <br /> 5. Continuation of the Volunteer Appreciation picnic <br /> 6. Videotape footage of park development activities for broadcasting on the <br /> City's cable channel <br /> 7. Advertise park development in the Community Recreation brochure <br /> Recommendation <br /> Staff recommends that the Commission review the above ideas, brainstorm additional <br /> ideas and direct staff as needed to implement all or some of the ideas in 2000. <br /> • <br /> 13065 Orono Parkway • P.O.
