tof City Memorandum
E
River
To: Parks and Recreation Commission
From: Michael Hecker,Parks and Recreation Director
Date: July 9,2014
Subject: Parks and Recreation Master Plan Report
The Parks and Recreation Master Plan Committee include Parks and Recreation Director
Michael Hecker,Recreation Manager Steve Benoit,Parks Supervisor Rodney Schreifels,Park
Planner Chris Leeseberg and Park Commission Members,Mark Ahlness and Ryan
Holmgren.
The time frame for this project is January 2014 to October 2014.
The Master Plan process has presented various opportunities for public workshops during
the month of June. This has included a feedback session for the Trail Park Stewards and
their volunteers, a work session for the Parks and Recreation Commission, and an Open
House.
The Parks and Recreation Master Plan Open House on Wednesday,June 24 was well
attended by over 50 people. It was a good representation of interests from athletics, park
improvements, trails,Houlton acquisition and skate park supporters. HOA's were also
represented. About 12 people participated from Pinewood and while their main interest was
the golf course, they were also able to provide feedback to the overall park system.
Based on all of this public feedback and the communitywide survey,a draft framework for
future investment has been developed. The framework identifies priority initiatives that have
been developed into an online survey. We want to know what residents think about these
priorities. Over 140 people have filled out the survey to date. The survey is now on the
city website at www.ElkRiverMN.gov until July 13.
A Community Open House to review the draft plan of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan
is scheduled for Wednesday,August 20 at 5—8 pm. This will be the first opportunity for
the public to review a draft of the master plan before it moves forward to the Commission
for review and approval.
P ® hERED ® 1
N:\Departments\Parks and Recreation\Commission\Packets\2014\07-09-14 PRC Packet\Parks and Recreation Master NATURE
Plan Report 7-9-14.docx
