1 Request for Action
River
To Item Number
Parks and Recreation Commission 6.1
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
Discussion Item July 9, 2014 Michael Hecker,Parks and Recreation Director
Item Description Reviewed by
Bailey Point Nature Preserve Rotary Bench
Donation Reviewed by
Action Requested
No formal action is being requested at this time.
Background/Discussion
Staff has been working with Lynn Caswell from the Rotary on a memorial in honor of Thomas McNair
for the Bailey Point Nature Preserve. The memorial idea was first presented to the Commission at the
end of last year. The Rotary still has interest in placing the memorial near the confluence of the Elk and
Mississippi Rivers. The concern is the length of time that the proposed site for the memorial has been
underwater this year. Lynn plans to attend the Commission meeting to discuss a new site and/or idea for
the memorial.
Staff has reached consensus with the Rotary on the type of bench proposed. Pictures of the proposed
park bench are attached. The composition is a recycled plastic lumber product. The lighter Douglas fir
color is preferred. Staff is recommending a bronze memorial plaque that the manufacturer can install
recessed into the bench. The Rotary has discussed that the message be engraved into the recycled
lumber. The engraving would need to be completed after purchase and this practice would void the
warranty of the bench slats.
Financial Impact
None
Attachments
• Bailey Point Nature Preserve Concept Layouts (2)
• Bench Memorial Picture Examples
PPOIERER i1
NATURE
