,/i
Elk River
Municipal Utilities UTILITIES COMMISSION MEETING
TO: FROM:
Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission Troy Adams, P.E. —General Manager
John Dietz—Chair
Al Nadeau—Vice Chair
Daryl Thompson—Trustee
MEETING DATE: AGENDA ITEM NUMBER:
June 10, 2014 6.1a
SUBJECT:
Staff Updates—General Manager
DISCUSSION:
• The past few weeks have been monopolized with human resources work as I've
conducted 11 interviews since the May 20th Commission meeting, and a total of 24
interviews since the April Bch Commission meeting. This volume of hiring is not normal
and most of the interviews were the result of backfilling vacated positions due to internal
promotions. It makes me proud that when stacked up against external candidates,
internal candidates are often better qualified. This is a result of our employees' desire for
professional development and their initiative. I've witnessed time and time again our
employees going above and beyond their normal job duties to add skills, develop
expertise, and help out where needed. We truly have a great group of employees that
serve our community.
Much thanks to Mark Fuchs, Theresa Slominski, Eric Volk, Jennie Nelson, and Michelle
Canterbury who all played roles in the process through participating in the interviewing,
resume and application review, and scheduling background checks and drug/alcohol
screenings. This was a lot of work at a time when everyone's plates were already full. I
appreciate their involvement in the process to assure we get the right people and get them
in the right positions. It reminds me something Jim Collins wrote in Good to Great, "The
old adage 'People are your most important asset'turns out to be wrong. People are not
your most important asset. The right people are.- We continue to build onto our great
team of employees to better serve our customers.
• I attended the Great River Energy annual meeting in Maple Grove on June 4 and will
provide an update at the meeting.
• I attended the Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association(MMUA)board strategic
planning session on June 5-6 in Plymouth, MN.
POWERED 81
Page 1 of 2 NATURE
Reliable Public
Power Provider P O W E R E D T o S E
77
