Elk River
Municipal Utilities UTILITIES COMMISSION MEETING
TO: FROM:
Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission Troy Adams, P.E. —General Manager
John Dietz—Chair
Al Nadeau—Vice Chair
Daryl Thompson—Trustee
MEETING DATE: AGENDA ITEM NUMBER:
February 11, 2014 5.5
SUBJECT:
2014 Hockey Day Minnesota Update
DISCUSSION:
The January 18,2014 Hockey Day Minnesota(HDM)in Elk River was a wonderful community event
that showcased how private and public entities can work together. The event not only highlighted Elk
River's ability to host a major event, it also focused a national spotlight on our community spirit and our
passion for hockey.
Elk River Municipal Utilities contributed labor and material to HDM. ERMU upgraded the lighting at the
Handke Stadium and helped install the hillside benches. Along with the Elk River Fire Department, Elk
River Police Department,Elk River Public Works, Sherbume County Sheriffs Office, and other City of
Elk River personal,ERMU management participated in emergency preparedness training with the
through the activation a Public Safety Command Center.
Of all the work that ERMU put into helping HDM become a success, very little generated an expense.
The lighting upgrades would have been something ERMU would have done for the City regardless of this
event. The time that ERMU management invested into the operation of the Safety Command Center
serves a greater purpose as emergency preparedness training. The afterhours and overtime work
performed by the lineworkers helping to install the hillside benches was minimal. Excluding any labor
provided during normal business hours, ERMU's labor and equipment expenses for HDM were$910.08
to date. All electric usage was metered and paid for as was the installation of the temporary electric
service.
For a third party event,ERMU policy would be to charge for this labor. However, the benefit of this
event to the community, the opportunity to collaborate with the other event partners, and the positive
community image this event created provided a value to our customers not recognized through a typical
third party event.
ACTION REQUESTED:
Management recommend the Commission approve the$910.08 in labor and equipment expense be
donated to HDM.
Page 1 of 1 If1AEAE1
1 /
NATURE
Reliable R INIC
Power Provider POWEMEe To SERVE
181
