Background/Discussion The Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) wants to establish a subcommittee to work through the formation of a 501(c) (3) designation that will help fundraising efforts for repairs to the Jackson Street Water Tower. The subcommittee is necessary to facilitate meetings more frequently than once per quarter, as established by ordinance. The water tower was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012 and the successful nomination of the historic structure has increased public awareness. With formation of the subcommittee the HPC is looking to use the momentum to raise money for the structure's restoration. The HPC discussed the formation of a subcommittee during their February 20, 2014, special meeting and voted to research the next steps for the formation of a non-profit 501(c) (3) designation. A non-profit will allow the subcommittee to accept tax deductible donations for the restoration. Commissioner Fox agreed to further investigate the requirements and,with Council approval,will propose the next steps to the HPC during their March 20, 2014, special meeting. The subcommittee organization has not yet been finalized but is anticipated to include a member at large, one member from the County History Center,two HPC representatives, and one City Council representative.
