ITEM 1 8.
J
r
City of
Elk
River
MEMORANDUM
TO: Park and Recreation Commission
FROM: Michele Bergh, Recreation Manager
DATE: February 6, 2003
SUBJECT: Staff Report
Facility Subcommittee
We continue to meet and have one more meeting scheduled to come up with a
recommendation for tournaments and recap everything we've covered thus far. We hope to
have recommendations for the April meeting for your consideration.
Wellness Committee
The Wellness Committee held their kickoff event in January. We had about 35 employees
attend. Every employee received a folder with a calendar of events for the year, a chart with
recommendations for preventative care, an overview of the exercise challenge we will be
doing as a city in conjunction with the program the county offers, a parks and trails map, a
recreation program guide, and a chart to use to track their physical activity if they want. The
information seemed to be well received. We have also been running"Women on Weights"
after work that has had 6-9 women attend each time in the wellness room at city hall. We
have set the room up with stations to work various muscle groups as well as stations for
cardio. The recreation department also has 8 employees participating in the U Pass program
at this time. We are very excited about the opportunities this group will provide and look
forward to serving the employees.
Girl Power/Just for Girls
We have our kickoff events scheduled for the 7th and 8th of February. Both events are full
and, between the two,we are serving 70 girls between the grades of 2°`' and 5`h. We have a
waiting list of about 10 girls at this time. These programs are intended to assist young girls
in developing positive self-images, learning goal-setting skills, and encouraging them to be all
that they can be. We are excited about these offerings and hope to continue these programs
well into the future.
