The Commission did request for staff to estimate costs for installing lighting for the rink at Mississippi Oaks Park. Background/Discussion Karen Jussila who resides at 179th Ct next to the Mississippi Oaks Park came to the December Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting Open Forum with the request for lighting of the outdoor ice rink. She stated that residents surrounding the outdoor rink are requesting lighting to be installed so all residents can ice skate after dark. She submitted a signed petition that is attached showing support of the request. The Commission briefly discussed the idea and requested that staff return to the Commission with estimated costs. The lighting of the rink can have several options. The highest quality option includes a two pole Musco Light Structure Green system for a skate area of 130 x 60. The estimated cost of this option and a new electrical system is $30,000. A less expensive option with LED lighting for four poles is much less estimated at around $12,000. Whatever the option, any capital project requested must follow the City building and electrical codes. While staff does feel this could be a worthwhile request based on the interest for the ice rink at this location,we need to reiterate that the Commission not proceed with any request until the Parks and Recreation Master Plan is complete. Financial Impact The range of lighting a neighborhood park outdoor rink with various options is in the range of$12,000 to $30,000.
