City of
Elk Request for Action
River
To Item Number
Mayor and City Council 8.1
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
General Business January 6, 2014 Michael Hecker, Parks and Recreation Director
Item Description Reviewed by
Renaming of Orono Athletic Complex Cal Portner, City Administrator
Reviewed by
Action Requested
Approve by motion the renaming of the Orono Athletic Complex as the Dave Anderson Athletic Complex as
recommended by the Parks and Recreation Commission.
Background/Discussion
The Parks and Recreation Commission discussed and reviewed a request from Mayor John Dietz that the
Orono Athletic Complex be renamed as the Dave Anderson Athletic Complex. This request was
submitted in writing at the November Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, as outlined in the
Parks and Facilities Naming Policy. Aso, as required in the policy, a public notice requesting a public
meeting for renaming was posted and published in the local paper at least 10 days prior to the December
11 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting.
This action was unanimously supported by everyone in attendance at the Parks and Recreation
Commission December 11 meeting. There were no public comments on the renaming. Dave Anderson
was out of town and did not attend. Staff discussion with Dave Anderson indicates that the name Dave
Anderson Athletic Complex is preferred as stated in the original request that came to the Commission in
November.
The contributions that Dave Anderson has made to the city's park system are tremendous and
unparalleled. Dave has spent the past 30 years volunteering thousands of hours creating, improving, and
maintaining our park system. Staff recommends this action to rename the complex.
Financial Impact
None at this time. Possibly the cost of installing signs with the new name.
Attachments
• Submission Request to Rename Orono Athletic Complex
• Parks &Facilities Naming Policy
• Orono Athletic Complex Map
P a w E A E U s r
NaA f RE]
