Elk River
Municipal Utilities
13069 Orono Parkway phone: 763.441.2020
Elk River, MN 55330 Fax 763.441.8099
May 28, 2004
To: Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission
Jerry Takle
James Tralle
John Dietz
From: Bryan Adams
Subject: 2-Way Radio Repeater
As our electric distribution system expands particularly in northern Elk River,
communication with our 2-way radio system is not adequate. We have always been
aware of this issue but because our employees spent little time in northern Elk River, it
was of little consequence. With the newly acquired territory from Connexus we need to
address this issue. Radio communication with employees working in Dayton is also
marginal. If one of our employees has an emergency, or need additional equipment or
material, they need a good method of communication.
We already possess the radio frequencies for a repeater system. As a test, we placed a
temporary repeater on our Auburn Street water tower (east of Menards). This test was a
good success and appears to solve the 2-way radio communication issue.
Granite Electronics of St. Cloud, Minnesota is our Motorola 2-way radio equipment
supplier. The cost to install and make operable this repeater system is estimated to be
approximately $15,000.
Staff recommends authorization be given to purchase and install the 2-way radio
repeater system. This is a non-budgeted item. The money's to pay for this would come
from contingencies, 75% from electric department and 25% from water department.
