Elk River 1
Municipal Utilities
322 King Avenue phone: 763.441.2020
Elk River,MN 55330 Fax:763.441.8099
January 30, 2004
To: Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission
John Dietz
Jerry Takle
James Tralle
From: Bryan Adams
Subject: Purchase Front-end Loader/Forklift
Our 2004 budget contains a$40,000 allowance to replace our 20+year old 945 Bobcat
Skid-steer. This skid-steer is used to lift our heavy cable reels. This skid-steer
marginally handles these cable reels and has seen its better days and needs to be replaced
with a larger machine. Staff has researched many equipment options to replace this skid-
steer and we keep coming back to the front-end loader/forklift option. Attached is a
specification sheet for the class of equipment we are considering.
We have been unable to find a used front-end loader with the capacity to meet our needs
for $40,000. We have found the following pieces of equipment.
a.) Used Caterpillar IT14G with 7500 FIR with Bobcat 945 trade in $49,075
b.) New Caterpillar IT14G from State Bid with Bobcat 945 trade in $78,331
c.) New Case 52IDXT from State Bid with Bobcat 945 trade in $74,720
We have looked at other State Bid options but they are all more expensive. All of the
other used machines are more expensive. The used IT14G quoted above is % worn out
and will need work. As much as I do not like spending the extra money, the Case
521 DXT is a better buy.
Staff recommends authorization be given to purchase the Case 521DXT.
