As part of the grant agreement, the city is
required to conduct an archeological survey prior to the final reimbursement of the grant funds for the
acquisition. The city will engage a professional archeologist and interested volunteers to complete the
survey project.
The project will be conducted to meet the standards of the Minnesota State Historical Preservation
Office. Public participation will be encouraged using the very successful methods used by St Cloud State '
University in the past. Volunteers will be paired with professional staff and encouraged to participate in
all aspects of the field work. Daily tours for be given for interested individuals. We expect that the
survey will take about two weeks, preferably during the month of June.
Staff is recommending that the funding for this requited archeological project be paid for with a grant
through the Minnesota Historical Society. Part of the requirement in the grant process is to show
community support and the initial step is for the Heritage Preservation Commission to approve this
request for action. The Park and Recreation Commission approved the request at their January 9,2013
meeting and the item will go in front of the City Council for approval on January 22,2013.
Action Motion by_ Second by_ Vote _
Follow Up
rung B1
N:\Depafircnts\Community Development\Enviconmental\Heritage Preservat ion\HPC\2013\Action RequesteARFA ATURE
accheaological survey of bailey pointdocx
•
