REQUEST FOR ACTION River TO ITEM NUMBER Parks and Recreation Commission 7.1.A AGENDA SECTION MEETING DATE PREPARED BY Action Item December 12, 2012 Michael Hecker,Parks and Recreation Director ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED By Neighborhood Outdoor Skating Rink Closure Cal Portner, City Administrator REVIEWED BY ACTION REQUESTED Closure of the Fresno Park Outdoor Skating Rink BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION The City currently maintains seven neighborhood outdoor skating rinks. They include: • Fresno Park • Riverplace Park • Kliever Lake Fields • Lions Park • Trott Brook Farms Park • Handke Stadium • Mississippi Oaks Park Over one year ago it was recommended by staff and approved by the Parks and Recreation Commission that two rinks, Country Crossings and Highlands West, be closed due to either little or no use by the public. This was based on tracking usage for the years up to 2010. The Fresno Park rink is recommended to be closed for the same reason and in addition to preserving the newly resurfaced court. The basketball court at Fresno Park was surfaced and gaming lines installed this past summer. The closure of Fresno will provide a longer life to the court surface and allocate additional resources to the heavily used rinks, in turn providing higher levels of service to the community. The Parks Maintenance staff will continually monitor skating rink use patterns in addition to tracking public feedback regarding rink offerings. This data will be reviewed annually to determine the best skating rink allocation throughout the City to offer the most effective customer service to the community.
