General Election, Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 6:30 p.m.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The City Council serves as the Canvassing Board for city elections.
Primary Election Canvassing Board Meeting
Per state law, the Council must meet to canvass and declare city election results on the second or third
day after the primary. The canvass may only be held on the second day after a primary if the county
auditor agrees to review primary voting statistics within a time that permits the canvass to be conducted
on that day. Staff requests that the primary canvass be held on Friday, August 10 in order to have time to
process the results and prepare for the canvassing meeting. In 2010, three members of the Canvassing
Board met at 8:00 a.m. Council should discuss what time works best for at least three members to attend
the Friday meeting.
General Election Canvassing Board Meeting
Per state law, the city needs to canvass and declare city election results within 3-10 days after a general
election. The Council has a regular meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 13 (Monday is the
Veteran's Day holiday). As past practice, staff requests the Canvassing Board meet the same night at 6:30
p.m.
QCt1011 ~-Potion by Second by Vote
Follow Up
P OfMERE~ BY
N:\PubGc Bodies\City Council\Council RCA\Agenda Packet\07-1G-2012\2012 Sct Canvassing ~Stgs.docs ~„ i~~~~~~
