REQUEST FOR ACTION
TO ITEM NUMBER
Ma or and Ci Council 6.4
AGENDA SECTION MEETING DATE PREPARED BY
Awards/Recognitions/Presentations June 18, 2012 Michael Hecker, Parks and
Recreation Director
ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED B~/
Recognition of Retirement of Senior Center Coordinator Sue Cal Portner, Ci Administrator
Kostanshek REVIEWED BY
ACTION REQUESTED
Mayor and City Council to present retirement plaque to Senior Center Coordinator Sue Kostanshek.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Senior Centex Coordinator Sue Kostanshek retired on June 7, 2012, after serving the Elk River
community fox 27 years. Sue started her career with the city in September 1985 as the senior center
coordinator working at the 350 Evans Avenue Senior Centex during most of hex career, and then
developing the senior programs at the Activity Center for the past five years.
Sue's knowledge and relationships developed with many of Elk River's older adults will be greatly missed
by the department and the community. She is recognized for building a strong senior program, including
the unique partnership with Guardian Angels to provide the space and programs at the 350 Evans Senior
Center. In 2007, the Senior Center programs were growing, but the space was limited. The City of Elk
River recognized this growing need and purchased the Activity Center in which Sue developed an
outstanding senior program that has built a positive reputation in the community.
The number of lives that Sue has assisted during her 27 year career with the city is impressive. Nobody
knows the exact number, but many have told me she has touched the lives of thousands and made life
better for hundreds of older adults. This is the type of career record Sue and the City of Elk River can be
very proud of.
We wish Sue to live lightly but brightly during her retirement years.
ATTACHMENTS
^ Plaque language
Action Motion by Second by Vote
Follow Up
N:\Public Bodies\Ciry Council\Council RCA\Agenda Packet\06-18-2012\Sue retirement June 2012.docx j ` ~
