TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: Mayor & City Council Pat Klaers, City Admi~is~trator March 2, 1998 Varsity Field Improvements On October 27, 1997, the City Council authorized up to $6,000 for improvements at the varsity field for fencing, scoreboard, and water. I would like to advise the City Council that the fencing improvements at the varsity field have taken place. The city and school both contributed about $3,100 into this project. The balance of approximately $2,900 is available for additional improvements. I have authorized Phil Hals to have water installed near the first base dugout so that the field can be watered down prior to games. This work will cost about $2,900. Phil will be working with Big Jon's Construction Company to accomplish this work. For your information, we have used Big Jon's on the Heritage I - II drainage issue, work on the eastern athletic fields, the utility improvements at the ice arena in 1996, and he also provides snow removal services for the city. Phil is comfortable working with this firm and this water improvement will be completed prior to April 1998. To have a drinking fountain installed outside of the first base dugout would cost another $1,500-$2,000. This fountain is pre-made and, according to Phil, is vandal proof. If the city wants this fountain installed it would be our financial obligation and the source of funds would be the same as the original $6,000; which is our park equipment/infrastructure reserve. Staff supports this additional expenditure of up to $2,000 for the fountain. Regarding the scoreboard, Roger can provide and update the Council at the meeting, but I understand that arrangements have been made with a soft drink company to donate a scoreboard and that the school is in charge of installation. 13065 Orono Parkway · P.O.
