Rolfe, Police Chief ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED By Requesting Authorization to Hire a Community Service Officer Lauren Wi er, HR Re resentative II REVIEWED BY Tim Simon, Finance Director ACTION REQUESTED The Police Department is requesting authorization to hire Jeff Prehatney as a Community Service Officer II (CSO II) beginning in July 2011 at pay Grade 3, Step B. BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION CSO II Bob Swenson submitted his written notice of his retirement effective June 17, 2011. Sob's many years of experience and his loyal service will be missed greatly. Since November of 2010, Reserve Captain Jeff Prehatney, has been assisting the Police Department by covering shifts left vacant due to Bob Swenson's illness. During this period Jeff has proven himself to be a very capable, dedicated CSO. Jeff has expressed an interest in the position and my staff and I recommend that he be promoted to a full-time CSO II position, Bob Swenson's former position. Jeffls experience over the past several months and his more than eight years of experience as a reserve officer make him an exceptionally well prepared and qualified candidate for this position. He has received training and has the knowledge to fulfill the necessary functions required of a CSO II. FINANCIAL IMPACT We are requesting to start Jeff Prehatney at Grade 3, Step B ($16.29 per hour). We feel that this is appropriate due to his many years of experience volunteering for the Police Department and his level of training, both academically and through on the job skill development. He will be replacing a position currently budgeted at Grade 3, Step E ($20.05 per hour), so the City will recognize an overall savings for 2011.
