ITEM # 8.4.A.
Orono Park 5tormwater Project 8.4.A
From: Basiletti, Mark - Elk River, MN [Mark.Basiletti@mn.nacdnet.net]
Sent: Monday, November O1, 2004 11:35 AM
To: bmaertz@ci.elk-river.mn.us
Subject: Orono Park 5tormwater Project
Bill,
I wanted to update you on our progress. 1 discussed the project with staff here and
we agreed that the best option would be to install a Swale that would begin at the
top of the boat ramp and extend north east toward the low area along the shoreline
(see attached jpg file). The Swale would have gradual side slopes and the first 60
to 70 feet could be mowed so that recreational use would not be impacted in the area
near the dock and boat ramp. The remaining part would be unmowed and consist of
dense vegetation to provide filtering. A curb cut and x low diversion across the
boat ramp would be used to direct runoff into the Swale. A shoreline buffer where
the Swale outlets to the lake could also be installed for wildlife and erosion
control benefits. Let me know if the location of these BMPS is workable.
Last Thursday at the peak of the rainfall event, we made some runoff measurements at
the boat landing which we can use to compare with predicted values from tables and
equations in our technical guide. It was a good opportunity since the total storm
was close to a "one year"
24 hour event.
This Friday (Nov. 5th) at 1 p.m. I will be meeting with Craig Peterson, an engineer
with MRCS, and we will visit the site. He will comment on our proposal and give us
some recommendations for designing BMPS. The drainage area is fairly large at 11.5
acres and most of the 4.3 acres of impervious area has curb and gutter.
subsequently, the peak discharge is relatively high and we want to make sure our
BMPS will work as intended.
Mark
Page 1
