REQUEST FOR ACTION
ver
TO ITEM NUMBER
Ci Council 5.4.
AGENDA SECTION MEETING DATE PREPARED BY
Administration March 7, 2011 Lori ohnson, Ci Administrator
ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED By
Pinewood Golf Course Update
REVIEWED BY
ACTION REQUESTED
Authorization to create, advertise, and fill a seasonal lead clubhouse attendant position to replace the
clubhouse coordinator who resigned on February 28, 2011 and to eliminate the existing clubhouse
coordinator position.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
In the next week the Pinewood staff will begin work to prepare for opening the golf course for the
season. As I stated above, on February 28 Paul Anderson, golf course superintendent, received a notice
of resignation from the clubhouse coordinator as she has accepted a position at another municipal golf
course.
This vacancy creates an opportunity to review the clubhouse operations and staffing to create efficiencies
in operation and to generate additional revenue for the golf course. Paul Anderson, Tim Simon, Lauren
Wipper and I have met on several occasions to develop a short term plan to provide staff for the 2011
season while taking into consideration a long range plan for the future operation of the golf course.
Given that the course opening is coming up soon and staff needs several weeks lead time to prepare prior
to opening, it is imperative that staff be put in place quickly. The short term proposal calls for creating a
lead clubhouse attendant position on a seasonal basis for the 2011 season. The clubhouse coordinator
position would be eliminated and replaced by this new seasonal position. Some of the duties of the
coordinator position have been accomplished with the assistance of employees from other departments
in the past and in the future more of the supervisory and management duties will be fulfilled by other
staff, mainly from the recreation and finance departments. The new position is being proposed as a
seasonal position to leave options open to the new parks and recreation director who, after reevaluating
the operations of the golf course, may have a different idea on how to best operate the course.
Further, because of the short timeframe between the receipt of the resignation and the council meeting, a
seasonal lead clubhouse attendant position description is not available for your review. However, that
position description will be developed, slotted into our compensation plan, and advertised as soon as
possible if authorized by the Council. It is estimated that the pay will be around $15.00 per hour. This
pay is less than the previous pay because the position will no longer have supervisory and management
duties.
N:\Public Bodies\Ciry Council\Council RCA\Agenda Packet\03-07-2011\Pinewood Update 030711.docx
