ver
MEMORANDUM
TO: Parks and Recreation Commission
FROM: Bill Maertz, Parks and Recreation Director
DATE: June 14, 2006
SUBJECT: Design Change: Rivers Edge Commons
ITEM:
Review revised plan for Rivers Edge Commons
BACKGROUND:
The low bid for Rivers Edge Commons was $265,000 over the estimated amount.
Council directed staff to explore options for cutting the cost of the project.
SUMMARRY:
A revised plan eliminates the poured in place structural walls and amphitheatre seating.
The ally would remain open but would be narrowed to 14 feet and become one way from
Main St. to the rear of the Sunshine Depot. Limestone block seating replaces the concrete
amphitheatre seats. The City Council reviewed this concept at the June 5 Council
meeting. The consensus of the Council was that leaving the ally open was a negative. It
was felt that perhaps enhancing the ally with pavers and landscaping might be an option
that would be acceptable.
Cost estimates have not been prepared but there appears to be a significant savings in this
revised plan. If the Park commission recommends this concept, and Council approves it,
cost estimates will be prepared.
ACTION REQUESTED:
Recommendation to Council for approval of revised concept that incorporates pavers and
landscaping in ally.
ATTACHMENTS:
Concept Plan
ER Star News Article from 1995
