Item # 8.3.A.
ver
MEMORANDUM
TO: Park and Recreation Commission
FROM: Bill Maertz, Parks and Recreation Commissioner
DATE: March 8, 2006
SUBJECT: Lake Orono Beach Testing and Posting Policy
ITEM:
Change testing standards for water quality at the Lake Orono Beach
BACKGROUND:
The standards for water quality testing and beach posting at Lake Orono do not fall within
the recommended range by the MPCA. A review of literature indicates that a threshold of
200 CFU (Colony Forming Units) of Fecal Coliform per 100 ml. creates a potential hazard
to bathers. City of Elk River environmental staff, wastewater treatment plant staff, and parks
and recreation staff recommend that the Lake Orono Beach be tested three days a week
during the bathing season with caution/informational signs posted when there is a reading
over 200 CFU per 100m1. Signs would remain up until readings are below 2000FU per 100
ml.
ACTION REQUESTED:
Recommend a change in testing policy to include testing three days per week with
caution/information signs clearly posted when there is a reading of 200 CFU per 100rn1. or
higher.
