Rolfe, Chief of Police <br />ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED BY <br />Authorization to Promote Ron Nierenhausen to Patrol Captain Lauren Wi er, HR Re resentative <br /> REVIEWED BY <br /> Lori ohnson, Ci Administrator <br />Action Requested <br />Promote Patrol Sergeant Ron Nierenhausen to the position of Patrol Captain effective January 11, <br />2011 at pay grade 13 step E. <br />Background/Discussion <br />The position of Patrol Captain has been vacant since the appointment of Brad Rolfe to Chief of <br />Police on December 6, 2010. The Patrol Captain is responsible for supervision of the Police <br />Department Patrol Division consisting of four sergeants and seventeen patrol officers. Per the <br />Police Department job description and qualifications for the position, Sergeant Nierenhausen is the <br />only qualified supervisor for the position. He is exceptionally qualified for the position. Ron <br />Nierenhausen is a twenty-two year veteran of the Elk River Police Department. He was hired as a <br />Police Officer in 1988 and was promoted to Sergeant on January 1, 1996. During his career he has <br />served on numerous specialized units and has had many additional responsibilities including: <br />^ Founder and original member of the K-9 Unit <br />^ Original member and current team leader of the SWAT team <br />^ Current Field Training Unit Supervisor <br />^ Bike Team Supervisor <br />^ Department Firearms Instructor <br />^ Honor Guard member <br />^ Former Police Reserve Unit Coordinator <br />^ YMCA Board Member <br />^ City Employee Recognition Committee member <br />Sergeant Nierenhausen is a US Army Reserve veteran. He holds a BA degree from St. Cloud State <br />University, an MA from Concordia University and is a graduate of the Northwestern University <br />School of Police Staff and Command. He has received numerous departmental awards and <br />commendations. <br />Financial Impact <br />The position is currently budgeted. Recommended pay grade 13 step E, which is the rate of the <br />previous Patrol Captain. <br />Attachments <br />None <br />
