The new vehicle will be utilized by the Fire Chief for administrative and fire command
duties. The current vehicle used by the Fire Chief (2004 Ford Expedition) will become the primary
vehicle for the recently approved Duty Officer program. The current Ford Explorer utilized for the on-
call duty officer will be removed as a front-line emergency response vehicle as it is well past the
recommended replacement cycle for its intended use. In keeping with past practice, the fire department
will work with the City's Fleet Committee on determining the long term use or disposal of the old Ford
Explorer.
The purchase of a full-size SUV will provide adequate space for carrying the equipment utilized for fire
command functions including storage compartments, equipment mounts and electrical outlets.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The new vehicle (2011 Chevrolet Tahoe) will be purchased off of the existing state contract from Thane
Hawkins Polar Chevrolet for approximately $30,000. The remaining funds will be used to outfit the
vehicle with emergency warning equipment, command/storage cabinets and technology/computer
upgrades. The total amount will not exceed estimated budget of $45,000 in the equipment replacement
fund.
Action Motion by Second by Vote
Follow Up
N:\Public Bodies\City Council\Council RCA\Agenda Packet\O1-03-2011\2011-01-03 4 7A Fire Department SLJV.doc
