Kiver
ro:
FROM:
DATE:
SUBJECT:
MEMORANDUM
Parks and Recreation Commission
Steve Benoit, Recreation Manager
November 30`s, 2010
Protection of Natural Resources in City Parks
Item: 7.2.A.
Concern has been raised regarding the protection of natural resources in Elk River City
Parks. The concern focuses on the issue of visitors removing resources from the parks such
as plantings and deer shedding's. Currently the City of Elk River does not have an ordinance
prohibiting the removal of natural resources from parks.
Staff conducted a survey of other Parks and Recreation organizations in regards to their
approach to protecting natural resources. Those organization's included Ramsey County
Parks, Washington County Parks, Anoka County Parks, Wright County Parks, Maple Grove
Parks, and the MN State Park System. Following are results of the survey:
• All agencies except for one stated that they have a policy restricting the removal of
natural resources from their park system.
• Some agencies completely restrict the removal of any natural resources and some
allow removal on a limited basis.
Staff is looking for feedback from the Commission whether to begin developing a policy
restricting the removal of natural resources from Elk River Ciry Parks.
N:\Depattments\Pazks and Recreation\Recreation\2010 PRC Packets\12-5-10 PRC Packet\7.2.B-Pmtection of NaNral Resources.doc
