ELK RIVER LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES August 22, 2000
Robert Jones, Chair present
Eleanor Holm, Vice Chair present
Geraldine Graham, Secretary present
Leslie Anderson present
Mike Hangaard absent
Also present: Verne Oleksowicz, GRRL
Meeting was called to order at 6:35pm by Bob Jones.
It was determined that a Quorum was present.
Action re: Minutes of July 25, 2000 meeting: A motion was made by Holm and seconded by
Anderson to approve minutes of July 25, 2000 meeting. Approved unanimously.
Correspondence: None. There were no suggestions from the public suggestion box.
Treasurer's Report:
Discussion: The Board noted the current reserve fund balance of $214,535.80. Jones
asked Oleksowicz to refresh everyone's memory about a previous discussion of library
expansion. Oleksowicz said that it would be the City and the Board's role to determine at
what point the Elk River library would need possible expansion, due to growing population
and library usage. The current one-story building does not have the capacity for a second
story, and GRRL's limited funding would not enable staffing of a two-story building. This
means that any library expansion would need add footage onto the current one-story
building.
Anderson made a motion, seconded by Holm, to accept Treasurer's report of July 31,
2000. Approved unanimously.
Librarian's report by Eleanor Holm:
Old Business: Leslie Anderson attempted to schedule Anderson Cabinets, the original
builder of the countertop, for repairs, but she was not able to get results from that
company. After contacting several other local cabinet makers, she found a company in
Ramsey willing to look at the repair job. Anderson will continue to work with this company
to get an estimate of costs for repairing the countertop.
Repairs requested from the City have been completed except for two items: removal of
dead tree near staff parking area and replacement of broken light in staff parking area. The
Board expressed concern for staff safety at night, especially now as darkness comes earlier
in the fall and winter. Graham will contact City to emphasize urgency for this light
replacement.
Surge protectors have been installed at the Library.
New Business:
A church youth group has requested daily use (Mon.-Fri.) of the community room from
6:30am to 7:30am, as they did during the previous school year. This requires that they be
loaned a key for the outside door. The agreement they entered into last year specified that
an adult would retain possession of the key and that an adult would be present at all times
with the youth. Jones made a motion, seconded by Graham, that the Library renew the
Page 1 of 2
