City of <br /> Elk Request for Action <br /> River <br /> To Item Number <br /> Mayor and City Council 8.1 <br /> Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by <br /> General Business February 2, 2015 Cal Portner, City Administrator <br /> Item Description Reviewed by <br /> Consider Police Chief Appointment Lauren Wipper, HR Representative <br /> Reviewed by <br /> Action Requested <br /> Appoint,by motion, Captain Ron Nierenhausen to the position of Police Chief. <br /> Background/Discussion <br /> Police Chief Brad Rolfe retired as Elk River's Police Chief effective December 30, 2014. <br /> On December 15, 2014, the City Council directed staff to use an internal hiring process to identify and <br /> recommend to the Council for approval. <br /> The city administrator met privately with nearly every employee of the department to solicit feedback on <br /> the organization and its leadership. <br /> Following an internal posting for candidates, Captain Nierenhausen was the only candidate to apply. <br /> A formal interview was held with the senior management team and they unanimously recommend Capt. <br /> Nierenhausen for appointment as police chief. <br /> The City Council will have interviewed the candidate in a special work session before the meeting. <br /> If approved, Chief Nierenhausen will begin in pay grade 16, Step D and be eligible for Step E pending <br /> successful performance evaluation in six months.
