City of
El -~-,
River
REQUEST FOR ACTION
TO ITEM NUMBER
Ma or and Ci Council 6.2.A.
AGENDA SECTION MEETING DATE PREPARED BY
Worksession Se tember 12, 2011 T. ohn Cunnin ham, Fire Chief
ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED By
Authorization to Advertise for Fire Department Administrative Lauren Wi er, HR Re resentative
Assistant REVIEWED BY t
~~
y
Robert Thistle, Interim Ci
Administrator
ACTION REQUESTED
Authorization to proceed with advertising the Administrative Assistant's position for the Fire
Department.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
This item was removed from the September 6, 2011, consent agenda by Council for discussion at the
September 12 meeting.
Nanci Libor, the Fire Department's current Administrative Assistant, has taken a similar full-time
position in another city. Her last day will be Saturday, September 10, 2011.
The Fire Department is looking to begin the process of filling the position as quickly as possible. Given
the many technical and job-specific responsibilities of the position, I anticipate that it will take a few
months to fully train a replacement for the position.
As you recall, the hours for the position were increased at the January 3, 2011 City Council meeting from
27.5 hours/week to 32 hours/week in large part due to the increased workload and responsibilities of the
position. I would like to maintain the position at 32 hours.
As discussed at the January meeting, the position was to be fully re-evaluated in a year to "ensure that the
position duties are correctly documented and the position is appropriately ranked in the City's pay
system." I still recommend that the position and its duties/responsibilities be evaluated in January. Given
the many clerical, data entry, and payroll responsibilities associated with the position, I recommend
moving forward with filling the vacancy now (using the current job description and pay rate) as this will
help minimize the amount of disruption within the daily operations of the department. This will also tie
into the department's 2012 goals of evaluating services, service delivery, and staffing levels.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The position is classified as Grade 4.
ATTACHMENTS
None
N:\Public Bodies\City Council\Coundl RCA\Agenda Packet\09-12-2011\Admin Asst Fire.docx
