REQUEST FOR ACTION
To Item Number
Ci Council 5.5.
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
Administration Ma 3, 2010 Lori ohnson, Ci Administrator
Item Description Reviewed by
Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education Request
to Extend Lease Reviewed by
Action Requested
Consider lease extension of one year with the option of a second year extension of City hall space for the
Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education (MBFTE).
Background/Discussion
The MBFTE is currently leasing space at city hall. The MBFTE is holding a long range planning meeting
in May and, as part of their planning process for space, recently requested that the City consider
extending their lease. That lease expires January 21, 2011. The MBFTE pays $5,400 per year for the use
of the space and pays phone and data access charges in addition. Currently, the space is mainly used for
board meetings. No staff is housed at this location. However, due to recent legislative changes, the
MBFTE is now charged with licensing full time firefighters. Therefore, starting in November, additional
staff will be added, and those staff members will be housed at the Elk River location. Barbara Tuccitto
Warren, Executive Director of MBFTE, expects that three to four staff members will be in place at this
location in the next two years.
The MBFTE proposed several options for extending the lease the longest being a lease extension of two
years with the option for a third. Right now we do not anticipate that the leased space will be needed for
city purposes in 2011. In order to keep the City's options open though, I suggest we enter into a one year
agreement with the option of a second year renewal. This is acceptable to the MBFTE.
Financial Impact
The annual lease revenue of $5,400 is credited to the General Fund.
Attachments
E-mail from Barbara Tuccitto Warren
Action Motion by Second by Vote
Follow Up
S:\PubGc Bodies\Council\Lori\2010\MBFTE Lease Extension 05 03 l0.doc
