~i
Elk REQUEST FOR ACTION
River
To Item Number
Ci Council 5.4.C
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
Administration A ri15, 2010 ohn Anderson P.E.
Item Description Reviewed by
19314 Avenue -Median Restoration Lori ohnson, Administrator
Reviewed by
Action Requested
The City Council is asked to consider options for landscape restoration of the median areas on 19314
Avenue and provide staff with direction on selected landscape treatment. Additionally, it is requested
that the City Council authorize staff to obtain quotes for the selected restoration.
Background/Discussion
The median areas along 19314 Avenue, from Xavier Street to Twin Lakes Road are ready for final
restoration. The construction plans for 19314 Avenue left the final restoration out in order to allow the
City Council to consider options. Suggested options are described in the attached memo and
summarized on page 6. Options for the restoration include various treatments such as turf grass, native
plantings, formal planting schemes, or combination of all or some of these. Staff recommends Option 2
be implemented on medians F, G, and H as shown on the attached exhibit 1. One consideration related
to the decision on median treatment is the cost of ongoing maintenance. Staff believes option 2 presents
a good balance of lower maintenance cost, attractive aesthetics, and green friendly components. Median
E was turf grass prior to the extension of 19314 Avenue, has been disturbed during construction, and will
require restoration. Restoration of the medians should take place in the spring of 2010 for the best
chance of successful growth.
Financial Impact
The construction cost of restoration is dependant on the landscape option selected. An amount of
$65,000 has been included in the budget fox 2010 for median restoration. We believe that $65,000 will
cover the cost of Option 2 (Native plantings with perennial planting end caps).
Attachments
Exhibit 1 -Median Layout Exhibit
Exhibit 2 -February 22, 2010 Anderson Memo
Action Motion by Second by Vote
Follow Up
