City

TO:

FROM:

DATE:

SUBJECT:

Item

MEMORANDUM

Mayor & City Council

Phil Hals, Street/Park Superintendent

July 3, 2001

Purchase of a Front Mounted Mower with I I Foot Cut

3.5.

The Street and Park Department has demonstrated front mounted turf mowers made
by John Deere, Ransome and Jacobsen. The machine of choice is the Jacobsen, sold by
Northstar Turf of St. Paul, for the following reasons:

We now own a 1996 Jacobsen, so many wear parts and maintenance supplies
would be interchangeable.
The Jacobsen has an individual hydraulic motor for each mower blade with no
vee belt drives on the deck.
The demonstrations took place during the hot times of the month of June and
both the John Deere and the Ransomes overheated and shut down.
The clipping disposal on the John Deere had undesirable effects on the operator.
The operator station and the safety switches on the Jacobsen were superior to
the John Deere or Ransomes.
All three machines are available on the state bid.
Price of the Jacobsen 5111 mower is $4 I, 134, including sales tax.
The 2001 budget had identified $48,000 in the equipment reserve for the
purchase of a front mount mower.

Action Requested: City Council approve the purchase of a Jacobsen 5111 for a price
of $4 I, 134, which includes sales tax.
