Special thanks to
City Engineer Terry Maurer for all his hard work in obtaining the federal portion of
the funding and with handling all the associated documentation that goes with a
federally funded project. In addition, consulting engineer John Anderson of BDM
Engineering did a great job working through all the design and environmental issues.
- Woodland Trails Restoration Project -The restoration of seven acres at the north
end of Woodland trail was substantially completed this summer. Work was
performed by volunteers and staff from the Bonestroo Engineering Environmental
Group. This project was
funded entirely by a $12,000 DNR restoration grant.
- The Riverfront Concert Series -The series wrapped up on September 3`~. An
estimated 13,500 people attended the concerts. A highlight was the Tribute to Elvis
on August 27 when close to 2,000 people attended. After the concert the Elvis
movie Blue Hawaii was shown on a giant inflatable movie screen. Before the concert,
The Bank of Elk River presented Mayor Stephanie Klinzing and Council Member
Paul Motion with a giant check symbolizing the Bank's sponsorship of the series for
2010.
- YMCA Resident Use -Staff would like to use this opportunity to remind people that
all Elk River residents are entitled to visit the YMCA four times a year at no cost.
Children must be accompanied by an adult and adults must have photo ID. This free
use of the facility is part of the funding partnership between the City and the YMCA.
- Statewide health Improvement Program -Sherburne County has received a grant of
$610,000 for planning and programs that help reduce smoking and obesity. The goal
is to develop policies, systems and environmental changes that support healthy
behavior. Staff is represented on the leadership team for the grant implementation.
