City <br />E <br />ver <br />MEMORANDUM <br />TO: Park and Recreation Commission <br />FROM: Bill Maertz, Parks and Recreation Director <br />DATE: September 9, 2009 <br />SUBJECT: Director's Report <br />- Great Northern Trail -The paving was completed September 3. Backfilling along <br />the trail and seeding will take place the week of the September 7. Special thanks to <br />City Engineer Terry Maurer for all his hard work in obtaining the federal portion of <br />the funding and with handling all the associated documentation that goes with a <br />federally funded project. In addition, consulting engineer John Anderson of BDM <br />Engineering did a great job working through all the design and environmental issues. <br />- Woodland Trails Restoration Project -The restoration of seven acres at the north <br />end of Woodland trail was substantially completed this summer. Work was <br />performed by volunteers and staff from the Bonestroo Engineering Environmental <br />Group. Park maintenance staff will continue to spot mow the site as needed in order <br />to control the annual weeds until the native plants are established. This project was <br />funded entirely by a $12,000 DNR restoration grant. <br />- The Riverfront Concert Series -The series wrapped up on September 3`~. An <br />estimated 13,500 people attended the concerts. A highlight was the Tribute to Elvis <br />on August 27 when close to 2,000 people attended. After the concert the Elvis <br />movie Blue Hawaii was shown on a giant inflatable movie screen. Before the concert, <br />The Bank of Elk River presented Mayor Stephanie Klinzing and Council Member <br />Paul Motion with a giant check symbolizing the Bank's sponsorship of the series for <br />2010. <br />- YMCA Resident Use -Staff would like to use this opportunity to remind people that <br />all Elk River residents are entitled to visit the YMCA four times a year at no cost. <br />Children must be accompanied by an adult and adults must have photo ID. This free <br />use of the facility is part of the funding partnership between the City and the YMCA. <br />- Statewide health Improvement Program -Sherburne County has received a grant of <br />$610,000 for planning and programs that help reduce smoking and obesity. The goal <br />is to develop policies, systems and environmental changes that support healthy <br />behavior. Staff is represented on the leadership team for the grant implementation. <br />
