Adopt the dangerous and potentially dangerous dog ordinance.
2. Adopt a resolution for summary publication of the ordinance.
Background/Discussion
In 2008 the Minnesota legislature enacted a series of laws regulating "Dangerous" and "Potentially
Dangerous" dogs. Since these laws took effect on August 1, 2008, the police department has applied
them on several cases involving dog bites. Through our experience in handling these cases, shortcomings
in the statutes were identified and a solution was found in the drafting of an ordinance to cover these
areas. The attached ordinance covers all the requirements set forth in state statute, but also addresses
certain areas unique to our community.
Financial Impact
Approval of the resolution for summary publication of the ordinance will save the city on publication
costs.
Attachments
^ Draft Ordinance: Regulation of Dangerous and Potentially Dangerous Dogs
Resolution for Summary Publication
Action Motion by Second by Vote
Follow Up
S:\Council\Police\2009\Dangerous Dogs.doc
