EarthCompliant.org
~»
Carbon Offset Projects
Through voluntary Green Tax programs and with the help of our customers EarthCompliant.org is proud to support
energy efficient, renewable energy, and biological sequestration projects. Investment in these projects plays a vital
role in the fight against global climate change. The Carbon Financial Instrument contracts purchased by Earth
Compliant.org represent investments made in carbon offsetting and Green House Gas reduction projects that meet t
highest industry standards of performance toward eliminating all GHG emissions that pollute our environment. For
your information we have included some more information on these projects below.
Van Eek Forest Project -Reforestation, USA
The Van Eck Forest Project ensures significant climate benefits are achieved from the
sustainable management of roughly 2,200 acres of working forestlands in Humboldt County,
California.
Owned by the Fred M. van Eck Forest Foundation, the Van Eck Forest is a working redvrood
forest conserved and managed by the Pacific Forest Trust to increase carbon stores, restore
biodiversity and old growth qualities and provide habitat for endangered species. In addition
helping cool the climate, the Van Eck Forest Project helps protect wildlife habitat, safeguard
clean water and sustain rural communities and jobs for the benefit of all Californians.
The Van Eck Forest Project will permanently reduce approximately 500,OD0 tons of C02
emissions over a 100-year period by ensuring use of sustainable forestry practices that sequester more carbon than
could be attained through conventional management. The .project is the first emissions reductions project registered
and independently certified under the rigorous accounting standards adopted by the California Air Resources Board t
help the state meet its ambitious greenhouse gas reduction goals.
Intrepid Dairy Farms -Methane Capture, USA
The Whitesides and Westpoint dairy farms, located in southern Idaho, USA, are changing the
method of processing manure to a system using anaerobic digestion. Anaerobic digestion
technology will help reduce the release of methane into the atmosphere and aid in mitigatinc
climate change: The new biogas digesters installed at both dairies will now capture and desti
methane gas produced from the waste of over 12,000 dairy cows.
6/8/2009
Prior to the installation of the anaerobic digesters, manure was managed through the use of
open lagoons. Anaerobic bacteria found in the lagoons broke down the waste into hundreds ~
tons of methane gas that was freely released into the open atmosphere. Now, biogas digeste
installed at the Whitesides and Westpoint dairies will instead capture and- destroy the methai
Manure is collected from the freestall barns and open lots using a vacuum truck and offloade
into a central mixing tank. The manure is then homogenized and diluted to the proper solids content prior to enterin
the digester.
The Intrepid Digester technology processes the waste in 4-5 days as compared to 20-30 days for most commercially
available manure digesters. Captured methane is processed using ITR's proprietary scrubbing process into pipeline
quality gas and sold to an industrial user whereupon it is combusted and destroyed.
Creating Community Benefits Through Emission Reduction Projects:
• Since installing the anaerobic digesters, air quality has improved substantially.
• The noxious odours that used to emanate from the treatment lagoons have been eliminated.
Fewer toxic substances will leach into the soil and local ground water supply because the animal waste from tl
http://earthcompliant. org/Proj ects.php
