~ / <br />~ A Proclamation for the American Cancer Society's ~ <br />RELAY Elk <br />FOR LIFE Relay Foy Life of Elk Rive <br />.~... <br />~~~` River <br />1' <br />~: <br />Whereas, Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal <br />cells which, if not controlled, can result in premature death; and <br />Whereas, Cancer is predicted to strike one out of every three Americans sometime in our lifetime with an <br />estimated 23,160 new cases of cancer diagnosed in Minnesota in 2009; and <br />Whereas, Approximately 259 new cases of cancer are estimated to occur in Sherburne County in 2009, <br />and 90 Sherburne County citizens are expected to lose their battle with cancer this year; and <br />Whereas, The American Cancer Society is the nation's largest and most respected voluntary health <br />organization since 1913 and has funded research which has contributed to every known method for <br />detecting cancer and techniques for treating cancer: thereby increasing the cancer survival rates firom 10% <br />to over 65%; and <br />Whereas, The American Cancer Society is a voluntary community-based coalition of local citizens <br />dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem through financial support and education <br />awareness; and <br />W1~ereas, the color purple is the signature color of the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life events <br />signifying the passion that cancer survivors and their families and loved ones feel for the eradication of <br />this disease, and <br />Whereas, the RELAY FOR LIFE event financially benefits the American Cancer Society's research and <br />patient support programs, and educationally benefits our local citizens; and <br />Whereas, the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life in Elk River is a community event that allows an <br />opportunity to network with businesses, associates, family and friends, with the same goal of making a <br />difference in the battle against cancer; <br />Now therefore, We the City Council of Elk River, Minnesota, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM May 2, 2009 <br />as PAINT OUR TOWN PURPLE DAY; and July 31 thru August 1, 2009 as RELAY FUR LIFE Days <br />throughout Elk River,. We further will urge all citizens to recognize and participate in this anticancer <br />campaign held in our community. <br />Now therefore, We also PRGCLAIM the recognition of the RELAY FOR LIFE event as the "PURPLE <br />RIBBON CAMPAIGN" to show your support to those individuals living with cancer, and honor those <br />individuals that have lost their lives to the dreaded disease of cancer. <br />Signed this 201 day of April 2009 <br />Ma~ tephanie Iinzing <br />City of Elk River, Minnesota <br />
