• Up to five days per calendar month to care for seriously <br />ill. family members who may not live with the employee. <br />For purposes of this provision, "seriously ill "shall be <br />determined in the sole discretion of the Ciry Administrator. <br />The City does not define dependents. The three examples above show the <br />spectrum of how this issue is addressed. <br />The IRS' definition of a dependent is the satisfaction of all five of the following <br />conditions. <br />1) Relationship Test: be either your relative or have lived in your <br />home all year as a member of your household. <br />2) Joint Return Test: if married, they cannot file a joint return. <br />3) Citizen or Resident Test: person must be a U.S. citizen, resident <br />alien, or resident of Canada or Mexico. <br />4) Income Test: person's gross income must be less than $3100, but <br />your child's income can be more. <br />5) Support Test: you must provide over half of the person's total <br />support. <br />Staff suggests the following: <br />Sick leave may be used for illness and doctor visits for the employee or the <br />employee's dependents including spouse. A dependent is defined as <br />someone that has the same address as the employee and for whom the <br />employee provides financial support. <br />
