Wasting water will be a future problem
^ More than double
While many might think
water is a never-ending,
free flowing resource, the
truth is, it's not.
Bryan Adams, the gener-
al manager for Elk River
Municipal Utilities, said
since water usage is at an
all time high, the risk for
further depletion of the
resource is becoming a real
danger:
The average person `uses
65 gallons of water per day
in order to carry out their
domestic needs like sh
ering, washing clothes
the ground, Adams said.
In Elk River, the water
comes from Mt. Simon-
Hinckley and has seven
wells dug into it, soon to be
eight.
It's the amount of water
usage that dictates how
many wells and what the
cost will be of water, Adams
said.
People commonly think
that something like water-
ing the lawn shouldn't be
a problem since the water
is just going back into the
ground, but it's not true
because the wells are dug
said.
This domestic use ends up
being about 1.5 million gal-
lons of water a day for the
entire city of Elk River.
But in the summer, when
people are trying to keep
their lawns fresh and green
with sprinklers, the usage
goes up to about 7 mil-
lion gallons per day. That's
5.5 million gallons beyond
domestic usage, he said.
Now water isn't this never-
ending supply that comes
from nowhere, instead it
comes from wells that are
dug from an aquifer, which
