Agricultural
weeds establish quickly and can shade out native prairie species while they are small and trying to
become established. To give the prairie plants a fighting chance, it is important to mow the planting on a
regular basis for the first two growing season. This can be done on an as-needed basis, based on field
inspection, but the safest way to insure your investment in the prairie is to mow when agricultural weeds
grow taller than about 8-12 inches. This typically means 2-3 mowing in late June, mid-July, and mid-
August the year of planting, and then once or twice the second year after planting in late June and mid- to
late July.
Recommended Old Field (Prairie Restoration) Resource Management Activities
ESTIMATED
DATE ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION COST/HOURS'
Prior to Brush/ small Brush removal to prepare site for seeding. $3,750
herbicide tree removal Treat stumps, except for cedar and remove
brush or pile/burn.
Spring Burn Break Burn breaks should be a minimum of eight feet $
construction in width and can be constructed any time
year 1 between October and April for an April burn
date.
Spring, Herbicide Apply glyphosate herbicide to field to prepare $1,150
application for burning and seeding.
