Murphy, Sr. -
Saint Paul
March 18, 2005
Dear Partners in Preservation:
The Preservation Alliance of Minnesota and its coalition of advocates are pleased
to announce that important bills affecting Minnesota's historic resources have been
introduced in the Minnesota legislature. The Minnesota Historic Structure and
Community Re-Investment Tax Credit (Senate File 1659/House File 1731) will
provide a significant tax incentive for the rehabilitation of homes, Main Street
businesses, utid other historic stt actur~s throughout tre state.
The bills provide fora 25% state income tax credit for qualified rehabilitation of
historic buildings, including private residences. Where applicable, this can be
paired with the federal 20% tax credit, providing a major incentive for property
owners to rehabilitate their buildings using historically appropriate methods. Tax
credits are one of the most effective tools for encouraging preservation activity.
The enclosed materials provide greater details.
We need your help in the following ways:
1. Have your Heritage Preservation Commission, City Council, local
Chamber of Commerce or business association pass the enclosed resolution
supporting the need for the credit at its next meeting. Be sure to send a
copy of the resolution to the Alliance as well as to your legislators.
2. Provide the enclosed press release and other materials to your local media,
and follow-up with them to convey the positive impact that this tax
incentive could have on your community (specific examples of potential
local projects would be even better), and
3. Contact your state representative and senator to let them know of the
importance of the legislation, including the positive impact. it would have
on your community when underutilized buildings have been rehabilitated.
4. Call, email, or write to tax committee members to encourage their support
for the legislation (see attached).
We appreciate your support and participation in this effort to help pass this
important piece of legislation.
Sincerely,
Magazine Editor
.Bob Glancy - . - .: .
` Minneapolis
Will Stark
office vo~uriteer Advocacy Committee'Chair
Marvel Anderson -
Rush City
219 Landmark Center
75 West Fifth Street
Saint Paul, MN 55102
