Today, President Clinton will announce Universal Hiring Program grants
totaling more than $605 million to over 2,500 jurisdictions for the hiring of nearly 9,000 additional
officers and deputies devoted to community policing. It is with great pleasure that I write to inform
you that your Department will receive a COPS Universal Hiring grant award.

COPS Universal Hiring funds law enforcement agencies and jurisdictions wishing to supplement
their current sworn forces or establish new departments. These grants cover a portion of the salaries
and benefits of newly hired officers over a period of three years and are an integral part of the COPS
Office's overall phn to address crime and related pwblems through community policing.

You will receive written confirmation of your estimated award amount and additional
information regarding your grant through the mail in two to three weeks.

We are pleased that you are participating in the Universal Hiring Program and look forward to
working with you in a productive partnership to further your community policing efforts. Should you
have any questions, please contact your grant advisor directly. If you do not have the name and
telephone number of your grant advisor, you may call the COPS Office at 1-800-421-6770.
