Receive temporary sign summary.
2. Direct staff to review possible amendments to the Zoning Ordinance to make sign regulations easier
to understand and consistent with City goals. Consolidate all sign information into one location in the
ordinance and review the specific requirements: size, height, number allowed.
Summary
A resident recently question the amount and size of commercial real estate signs within the city. On
November 6, 2008 staff toured the citysearching for commercial real estate signs. Fiftyplus signs were
documented with photos. In terms of size and number allowed, it appears that most meet the city
requirements. There were a few properties that had more than one sign and/or too' large of signs. The
biggest issue noted was the-setbacks from propertylines. Currentlythe ordinance allows 64 square feet
(two sheets of plywood) of commercial real estate signs with at 10-foot setback. (The pictures show
generally a 32 sq ft sign.) Staff will respond to these property owners, advising them of the ordinance
requirements and the need to remove and relocate these signs were applicable.
It has been conveyed to staff on many occasions that the sign information is extremelydifficult to find in
the ordinance and once found, it is confusing to understand. Currently, general signa,ge information is
located in one location of the ordinance (Sec. 30-851 thru 30-867) and then the specific requirements
(size, height, number allowed) for signage is located throughout the ordinance in each specific zoning
district. Based on these reports, staff feels, for customer service, it is appropriate to review the sign
ordinance, consolidating regulations in one section to better serve the public. Any changes recommended
by staff to make the ordinance easier to understand will be reviewed by the City attorney prior to review
by the Planning Conunission.
Attachments
• Commercial Real Estate Sign Images
ACtlon Motion by Second by Vote
Follow Up
S:\PLANIVING MAIN\Signs\2008\Action Requested - Signs.doc
