October 16, 2008
Dear Library Board Members,
As much as I hate having to write this letter I find I am getting into a situation that will not improve anytime in
the near future. Since the beginning of September and the return of all the students to school, sales have
dropped drastically. I would like to discuss the option of ending my lease early. In looking at the trend for the
past 6 months things are moving decidedly downward.
have done what I can to make this area more attractive and catch people's attention as they come thru the
front doors. Everyone is always greeted and warmly welcomed but I think the economy in general, as well as,
the reduction in general traffic coming into the library makes it nearly impossible to stay. I have done multiple
mailings of coupons, handed out coupons at all my other events, ran a monthly email special and worked hard
at word of mouth. With the combination of less traffic and economic issues for everyone, sales on average are
currently at $36 a day. As I write this mysales were $22 for a Wednesday. I don't foresee any changes
throughout the rest of this year. As Mick and I have discussed, December is very slow and November may not
be much better.
would like to request that we have an ending date no later than 12/31/08, which would give me time to let
people know but won't cause me to carry the losses into 2009. I would, however, like to try to sell the coffee
cart and have the option of an earlier ending date in case it should sell.
I apologize profusely for having to make this request but as excited as everyone was about the "idea" of a
coffee bar, the reality of it is very different as you can see by the following graphs. I have removed the numbers
for some confidentiality but can assure you the very top end of any of the graphs is $120 at the highest. Thank
you for your consideration and I will keep you updated if anything happens to change this situation. I am very
thankful to have had the opportunity & your support to check out the workability of this situation and learn that
it's maybe not the right fit for Elk River at this point.
Sincerely,
9~ ~~i
Janet McCarty
