Accumulating <br />evidence indicates that ou r country is under-investing in early childhood development, which is <br />diminishing our nation's ability to compete in the global marketplace. Reports released in 2004, such <br />as the Economic Policy Institute's Exceptional Returns, Committee for Economic Development's <br />Ten-Year Plan For The Invest In Kids Working Group, and the Early Childhood Funders' Collaborative's <br />New Economic Appeal For Preschool, confirm the huge long-term payoffs from investments in early <br />childhood development programs. <br />ilant .Is the Nlinnesata Eariyr £:"hiidl~aod I.nitiative7 <br />In 2003, the six Minnesota Initiative Foundations (M IFs) began to collaborate on a joint public po licy <br />initiative focused on early childhood. Recognizing that strengthening early care and education for <br />young children and their fam flies is the most important investment communities can make for the future, <br />the Minnesota Early Childhood Initiative was developed. The overarching goal of the Minnesota Early <br />Childhood Initiative...A Campaign for Cur Youngest Children is to ensure that every young child <br />has the best possible start toward a healthy I ife of learning, achieving, and succeeding . <br />.ter .;.~,- <br />:~:~£~. <br />a l,~t Is I-l;~pl~tn'rtz;? <br />The MIFs are currently launching 13 new early childhood coalitions, <br />bringing the statewide total to 64. A Statewide E arty Childhood Coalition <br />Network has been created to link all the coalitions. This network serves as a <br />vehicle to advance public policy, exchange ideas, share promising practices, <br />and create a statewide groundswell of support for young children. „% <br />h~zt Dias Been Acc~~mpl'sshect tt~ date? <br />• 64 Early Childhood Coalitions Launched <br />To date, 64 Early Childhood Coalitions have been developed in Greater <br />Minnesota. Within these communities, there are over 2,000 coalition members <br />representing diverse sectors, including the business community. <br />• Communi#y Profile Interviews Conducted <br />More than 2,000 community members participated in face-to-face interviews <br />from 51 coalitions to share their "perceptions" of the accessibility and availabil ity <br />of resources and support for young children and their families.
