The Initiative Foundation offers an integrated Planning and Preservation <br />Initiative that positively impacts communities that are working on the ~ N ITIATI~TE <br />preservation of `place, space, and natural resources "throughout the fourteen FO U N DATI O N <br />counties of Central Minnesota. <br />Purpose: To support citizen-based planning and activities that lead to the preservation of local <br />economies and locally-valued open space, key places, natural and cultural resources that maintain and <br />enhance the quality of life in Central Minnesota. <br />Principles: We support: <br />• Sustainable development which recognizes that natural resources are a key economic asset and <br />quality of life indicator for the region; <br />• Citizen-based planning to manage growth and change; building the infrastructure needed to <br />support a growing region, while intentionally preserving the natural qualities with which the <br />region is blessed; <br />Programs that avoid duplication of resources or assets offered by other organizations or <br />institutions. <br />Program Components: <br />Specialty Workshops and Training Opportunities: The Initiative Foundation offers subject and skill- <br />specific workshops on a regular basis in response to regional trends. Recent themes have included <br />education on: <br />• Conservation design and planning. <br />• Wastewater, drinking water and stonnwater management infrastructure. <br />• Strategic planning and funding mechanisms for parks, trails and open space. <br />• Control of invasive exotic aquatic plants including curlyleaf pondweed. <br />• Downtown revitalization. <br />• Arts and community/economic development. <br />• Developing farmer's markets. <br />• Running for and serving in public office. <br />• Annexation and mediation. <br />• Partnership training with the Government Training Services for members of planning <br />commissions and boards of adjustment, including workshops Local Government 101, Spotlight <br />on Subdivisions, So You 're Thinking About Planning c~C Zoning, Environmental Planning: <br />Choosing the Best Approach for- Your Community, Site Planning Basics for Non-Design <br />Professionals, Your Role as a Planning Commission Member, and Advanced Zoning <br />Applications. <br />Resource Referral: The Initiative Foundation connects its ccnstitucnts with experts through direct <br />resource referral, links on our website, and our "News You Can <br />Use" electronic newsletters.
