INFORMATION
c
fiver
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Nicola Blake-Bradley, Environmental Technician
DATE: October 8, 2008
SUBJECT: Upcoming "Environmental" Events
This memo is to inform you of upcoming events which the Environmental Department will
be involved with or will be conducting in the near future. Please contact either Rebecca or
myself with any questions or concerns regarding the events:
October 18, 2008: Elk River (River) Clean U~
This event is being coordinated by the Elk River Watershed Coordinator and will include a
portion of the river directly upstream from Lake Orono, near Wapiti Campground. The
purpose of the clean up is to remove solid waste debris which has or is in a position to enter
the river.
October 19.2008: End ofLake Orono Daawdown
The drawdown was a result of a request for shoreline maintenance by the Lake Orono Lake
Association. The MN DNR determined the dates for the drawdown and set a maximum of
24" drawdown (at the dam). The purpose of the drawdown is for removal of solid waste
debris (for example: tires, appliances, other solid waste) which has floated downstream. The
Environmental Department determined that an 18" drawdown would be sufficient to allow
homeowners the opportunity to remove solid waste material. The dam gates will be returned
to their normal operating level on Monday, October 20, 2008.
October 20 - 24, 2008: Fall Clean UR Week
This annual event will be held at the Elk River Landfill and will include mattress recycling
once again. A recent change to the event is that many large electronic items (I'Vs, VCRs,
DVDs, and Computers) will be free of charge. Some electronic waste materials will continue
to have a fee associated with their disposal. Residents must purchase a voucher through the
Environmental Department before taking their waste materials to the landfill. Vouchers may
be purchased the week prior to and the week of Fall Clean Up, but wastes may only be taken
to the landfill during the dates listed above. Sherburne County is sponsoring the disposal of
mattresses. Therefore, Sherburne County residents will be allowed to participate in Fall
Clean Up for mattresses and free disposal items. All other waste materials will be charged
non-resident rates.
