t~ver
MEMORANDUM
TO: HRA, City Council, Terry Maurer, Peter Beck, Lori Johnson,
Scott Clark, Cathy Mehelich, Heidi Steinmetz, Phil Hals, Jeff
Beahen
FROM: Pat Klaers, City Ad in ~~tor
~~ ,/ r/GG/Yg/
DATE: September 29, 200 ~~
SUBJECT: Downtown Flag
The situation with the downtown flag pole has changed in the last few months. The school
district volunteered to accept the flag pole; however, the actual relocation of the flag pole is
going to be on City property directly east of the County Administration building in the old
King Avenue right-of--way. In this regard, school superintendent Allan Jensen and I have
discussed the situation and we both believe that it is more appropriate for the City to retain
ownership and maintenance responsibility for this community asset. The City very much
appreciates the willingness of the school district to step forward and accept the flag pole so
that it could be retained in the downtown area, but in the final analysis it turns out that their
assistance is not necessary.
The flag pole is scheduled to be relocated sometime in October. The City will retain
responsibility fox maintenance of the flag pole and of the flag and for the grounds
surrounding the flag pole (concrete brick pavers are now being planned for this area). If
anyone has questions regarding this situation, please feel free to contact me.
S:\ADMIN\PAT\2005\09 21 council flag polememo.doc
