ITEM 5.7.

River

TO:

FROM:

DATE:

SUBJECT:

MEMORANDUM

Mayor and City Council

Bruce A. West, Fire Chief

January 14, 2002

Consider 2002 FEMA Grant Request

The Elk River Fire Department in conjunction with the Clear Lake, Becket, Big Lake, and
Zimmerman Fire Departments, will be applying for a 2002 FEMA grant under the category
of training. The Big Lake Fire Department is the lead agency in applying for the 2002 FEMA
grant. All five fire departments within Sherburne County are attempting to be awarded this
grant to have a fire training tower built on two and a half acres of land next to the Big Lake
Fire Department. The total funding for the training tower grant request from FEMA will be
$120,000. Once again, FEMA will require a local match of ten percent or $12,000. At the
December 19, 2001, Sherbume County Fire Chief's meeting, all five fire chiefs agreed to take
this item to their respective Councils/Boards for authorization to equally share the local ten
percent match required for the FEMA grant request. The amount of local match for the Elk
River Fire Department will be $2,400. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact
me at the Elk River Fire Department, (763) 441-4919.

Action Requested

I am requesting Council approval authorizing the City of Elk River to provide $2,400 from
the City Council Contingency towards the ten percent local funding match as required by the
FEMA grant contingent upon ail five fire departments receiving Council/Board approval for
their locally requested ten percent match if the Sherburne County Fire Chiefs are successful
in receiving the $120,000 FEMA grant for a fire training tower.
