Elk River Downtown Commercial Area
Property Description and Significance

Address: 701 Main Street
PIN: 75-405-0555
SHPO Inventory #: SH-ERC-045
Historic Name: Romdenne and Co.
Current Name: Sunshine Depot
Builder ! Contractor:'
Original Owner/Tenant: Joseph Romdenne
Architect/Source:
Date of Original Construction: 1898
Date of Survey: March 2002
Prepared by: Carole Zellie ! Landscape Research
Photo: 13
Property Number: 13

Description

This two-story, flat-roofed store building is clad in cream brick. The original facade is
completely covered by a new brick and wood facade, capped by a wood shingled
mansard roof. It is not known how much of the original facade might survive' behind the
modernization. The original three-bay design had a central entry flanked by large
display windows and an upper story with three windows. The side chimney evident
today is seen on early photographs.

Significance

The Romdenne and Co. building has lost nearly all of its historic integrity because of
facade modernizations. One of the earliest commercial buildings in the town center
that developed at Main and Jackson streets, and one of the first built after the fire of
1898, it was owned by Joseph Romdenne. Romdenne and Co. was one of several
general a d drug stores in Elk River at the turn of the century. A livery stable is shown
on this site on the 1894 Sanborn Map prior to the construction of the present building.

Elk River Historic Contexts and Phase II Dozontown Com~nercial Area Study
