The first story
shows the original two-bay division of the fagade. The square pilasters with simple
capitals flank bays filled with modem display windows. Above a deep cornice trimmed
with a rusticated brownstone band, the upper story has six arched windows surrounded
by a featureless cream brick fagade of relatively recent date.

Several historic photos show the building before its upper story modernization and
could be of great use in restoration.

Significance

This building is locally significant as the second location of the Bank of Elk River, the
first bank in Sherbume County. Established in 1885 with W.L. Babcock, W. H. Houlton
and Henry Castle as officers, the first bank was located on the north side of the railroad

Elk River Historic Contexts and Phase II Downtown Commercial Area Study
59
